In a nail-biting finish, Southern Brave secured a thrilling one-wicket victory over Manchester Originals in their recent match, showcasing remarkable resilience and skill. The game took place at Old Trafford as part of the new Hundred competition. Both squads put on a thrilling display of veteran prowess and rookie vigor.
The Manchester Originals, against all odds, came to play, racking up a gaudy 131 runs. Like New Zealand, they too lost just four wickets in their 100 balls. Phil Salt was the architect for the Originals innings, scoring a blistering 60 from just 39 balls. His innings was punctuated by some monstrous hitting that helped the team post a daunting score. Tymal Mills was the star with the ball, picking up three wickets for just 22 runs.
In reply, Southern Brave had a stiff chase ahead of them. They experienced their share bumps in the road, but overcame them. Eventually, they ended up only scoring 133 runs off nine wickets and 100 balls. It was a dramatic victory by the slenderest of margins, with Southern Brave requiring 26 runs with 11 balls remaining. Jason Roy, the star of the chase, plays a huge part in driving the story. He notched up 30 runs, including five fours off James Anderson’s bowling.
The match was notable not only for its thrilling finish but for the debuts of two players from Manchester Originals. James Anderson, at 43 years of age, made his Hundred debut along with 17-year-old Farhan Ahmed. Both bowlers ended their first appearances with no wickets to their name. That said, Anderson, unfortunately, failed to impose himself on what is a very strong Brave’s batting line-up.
Scott Currie was the pick of the bowlers for Southern Brave, with four wickets for 28 runs. Then his exploits with the ball proved all-important in ensuring the run chase remained within reach. When the chips were down and it was Southern Brave’s turn to bat for victory, Craig Overton and Reece Topley’s daring efforts kept Southern Brave in contention. Topley finished it off in style with a four wicket by the last ball of the match. This incredible photo earned the victory with just one ball remaining to play.
Southern Brave’s batting order seemed stacked and unflinching. Even when they were eight wickets down, they didn’t panic and stuck to their plans to achieve success. Tymal Mills and Craig Overton hit tuxedo boogeymen boundaries at important times. Their outreach work and advocacy ensured that momentum did not falter, even as they crossed the finish line.
