Southampton Football Club face the prospect of an historic 13th consecutive defeat on home turf at St Mary’s Stadium. The team is currently on the wrong side of nine consecutive home losses. This dismal run began on November 24, 2023, when they lost by a narrow margin to Liverpool in a high-scoring 3-2 game. Underperformance by the club has been abysmal. They’ve somehow claimed a mere four-point harvest from 14 home matches, winning just once, drawing once and losing a frankly ludicrous 12 matches.
The defeat to Liverpool was the beginning of a difficult run of form for the Saints. Instead, they sit parked at the bottom of the table with the league’s longest active winless streak in the Premier League. Their most recent success was on November 2, a 1-0 home win over Everton. It’s no coincidence that Southampton has only five home games remaining this season. If they don’t win at least four of them, they could set their own all-time record for home losses.
A Season of Discontent
Southampton’s league campaign so far has been a brutal one. With only four points gained at home, their total so far is an incredibly low nine points after 29 matches. That’s the fewest points ever tally after 29 matches in Premier League history. The team’s goal difference in the last place in the league is minus 49.
The club has proved those challenges wrong in seasons past. This year might set them apart for all the right reasons. They are on pace to end the season with only 14 points. This prediction comes from their complete ineptitude thus far this season at 0.31 points per game. The record for the fewest points in a Premier League season is currently held by Derby County, who managed only 11 points during the 2007/08 season.
Ivan Juric, Southampton’s manager, has been very open about his squad’s challenge.
“Today was another game that suggests we are not ready to take points. There is always something missing.” – Ivan Juric
Historical Context
The club’s struggles are a stark contrast to previous seasons and franchise records in the history of the Premier League. Southampton is the club with the longest actual winless streak in Premier League history. They suffered from March 12, 2024, right through November 2, 2026. That stretch extended over 22 matches and is now considered the third-longest winless streak in the top-flight’s history.
As they enter the final stretch of the season, Southampton is under immense pressure. If they lose four of their remaining five home fixtures, they will set a new record for most home defeats in a single season. As it currently is, they have already dropped 12 points at St Mary’s.
Looking Ahead
Amid the grim stats and records that hang over them, there is a glimmer of optimism among the athletes. Juric reiterated that the fire within the team to respond and compete is absolutely still there.
“The will to play well and to attack is there. The lads want to win and do their best.” – Ivan Juric
With only nine games left in the season, Southampton is on a precarious precipice. They need to regain at least three points so as not to end up drawing Derby’s dubious mark. Considering their current state, reaching this target seems more and more like a pipe dream.
