Under interim manager Tonda Eckert, Southampton secured a brilliant home win against title-challengers Leicester City. This victory is their fourth straight victory of the season! That league match back at the Valley was something special, and Southampton’s explosive attack was a sight to behold. They netted five goals in the first half alone! This level of play is a notable improvement from this team’s overall win total at the beginning of last season. It occurred just days before the sacking of their manager, Will Still.
Southampton’s swift counterattacks have become a hallmark of Eckert’s management style. After conceding early though, the team illustrated their tactical acumen immediately by executing a pretty sharp counterattack. Finn Azaz sealed off a perfect homecoming for him, scoring the winner. Manning curled the ball through to Adam Armstrong. Armstrong then promptly played through Leo Scienza just two minutes later, who helped Azaz register his second goal.
A Dominant First Half
The opening 45 minutes featured Southampton clearly announcing their presence, as they scored five goals in the first half alone. In the other semifinal, Hodder’ Eckert’s squad exploited Leicester’s defensive holes, making the most of their rapid counterattacks. Leicester had been a boogie team on the schedule. After all, they had only recently beaten Southampton four times in a row and were fresh from easing to wins over Norwich and Stoke too.
Olabade Aluko had a rough start to the game. Only six minutes into the match, Musovski picked up a yellow card for fouling down Scienza on a sudden counterattack. Despite this, Southampton’s offensive efforts continued unabated. Armstrong nearly added a fourth on two separate occasions, both before and after the break. Additionally, Scienza forced Leicester’s goalkeeper Asmir Begovic into a smart save, further emphasizing Southampton’s attacking prowess.
Second Half Success
The second half was comparable to the first in all respects with a ton of offensive fireworks. Southampton then added three more goals to their count to up Southampton’s total. Finn Azaz was a continued bright spark, scoring for the third game in a row. In turn, his steady production has turned into an important part of the team’s success over the past month.
Eckert’s strategy has been a successful one and he commented on how happy he was to execute that plan after the game. “I am very pleased. We knew we needed to invest a lot today for a clean sheet and we managed their quality quite well,” he stated. His focus on teamwork and collective effort was evident in his remarks: “It is a team effort. I’m not one for writing about specific players. But if we aren’t collaborating as a group, then no one gets to be the superstar. But hardly a word of praise is sufficient for the level of performance we’ve seen from this crew.
Challenges Ahead
There are still clouds in the sky on the horizon for Southampton despite their emphatic victory. Having Aluko sent off in his first professional start added to worries over depth and strategy going into rapidly approaching weekend-midweek-week fixtures. The team will need to be able to pivot quickly to maintain their winning streak. They won’t give up until they’ve triumphed over what lies ahead.
