Sophie Devine, the world-class captain of the New Zealand national women’s cricket team has dropped a major bombshell. She will retire from One Day Internationals (ODIs) after the World Cup, which will be held in India. At 35 years old, Devine has solidified her legacy as one of the finest all-rounders in world cricket, contributing significantly to the sport since her debut in 2006 at the age of 17.
This will be Devine’s first time captaining the White Ferns at the 50-over World Cup. T20 World Cup This thrilling tournament launches in India & Sri Lanka on Sept 30. The tournament’s opening match will see hosts India taking on Sri Lanka at Bengaluru. Devine will retire from ODI cricket following the World Cup. Though she has retired from the ODIs, she has re-iterated her intention to reinstate herself as available for T20 Internationals.
As captain since 2020, Devine has steered the team to notable successes, including leading New Zealand to T20 World Cup glory against South Africa in 2024. It’s on the stat sheet where her contributions to the team really shine. She is currently fourth on New Zealand’s all-time run-scorers list with 3,990 runs — an astounding average of 47.6! Further to that, she is one of just two players, along with Lea Tahuhu, to have taken over 100 wickets.
In response to her retirement announcement, Liz Green, New Zealand women’s performance head, voiced their support of Devine. “Sophie has the team’s full support after her decision,” Green stated, emphasizing the respect and admiration within the squad for their captain.
Devine reflected on her journey and decision, stating, “It feels like the right time for me to start stepping away.” She reiterated her commitment to the team, which will be undergoing a transition in leadership. “It’s important that everyone knows I’m focused and dedicated to giving this group everything I can before I step away,” she added.
For Devine, the future is bright—especially among younger players like defender Oliana Strange. “I’m really excited by where this young group’s going and I’m looking forward to playing my part in the next six to nine months,” she noted.
