In December, Sky Sports unveiled its biggest-ever boost to its Premier League broadcasting rights, starting from the 2025-26 season. The cable sports network is significantly increasing its coverage of Premier League matches live! It’ll jump from 128 games to a minimum of 215, more than tripling its Premier League haul. This change means that approximately 80 percent of all televised Premier League matches will be available exclusively on Sky Sports.
This enhanced coverage is part of Sky Sports’ promise to continue providing the most in-depth sports content to its viewers. Fans can now enjoy Sky Sports in new and exciting ways. With the approach giving them a choice of subscribing directly to the Sky platform or through the NOW streaming service that allows them to enjoy sports on a shorter, more flexible basis.
At the same time as this huge broadcasting boom is happening, Newcastle United is in the middle of their own transfer fight. The club reportedly had a £25 million earlier this summer for FC Lorient’s Yoane Wissa turned away. This attack makes sense given their attempts to shore up their attacking options. Nottingham Forest had similarly seen a similar offer for Wissa turned away by Brentford.
The situation surrounding Wissa is complex. The player really wants to go to Newcastle, but he doesn’t think he’ll be playing in the Champions League any time soon. Wissa was always more of a Newcastle second choice behind Benjamin Sesko if Alexander Isak left the club. As it stands, Newcastle’s odds of signing Wissa look short at best, prompting an interest in different targets.
Brentford oddly still hasn’t replaced player Bryan Mbeumo, who departed the club in advance of this summer’s transfer window. For example, last week a possible transfer for Omari Hutchinson to Ipswich Town collapsed over differences in payment structure. Understandably, this setback only raised their urgency to better fortify the squad. Even with this knockback, attentions will turn again towards Hutchinson as Brentford continue to recruit and search for the pieces to fit their jigsaw.
Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made moves to sign Wissa, making Newcastle’s pursuit even trickier. This newly raised player adds pressure on Newcastle’s front office as they must weigh their priorities against such developments.
