Sky Sports is increasing its Premier League output for the 2018-19 season. To improve access, they’re increasing the number of live matches from 128 to a minimum of 215! This is a HUGE jump forward in broadcasting folks! So, now Sky Sports will have the exclusive rights to watch some 80 percent of all televised Premier League matches.
The expansion will offer fans an unmatched chance to watch their favorite teams from start to finish in the regular season and playoffs. The broadcaster will feature live coverage of Premier League matches on “Super Sunday,” a weekly highlight that fans eagerly anticipate. On top of basic OTT subscriptions, fans will be able to stream matches without a long-term agreement through NOW.
That additional coverage would come just as the competitiveness of England’s top league is experiencing a golden age. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta recently discussed the intense rivalry within the league, stating, “The competition in the league now is like nothing we’ve seen before.” His comments tap into what’s clearly a growing resentment from teams and athletes. They are all beginning to realize the growing depth and continuity of teams around the league.
Arteta elaborated on the challenges that this season poses: “The level of the managers, the consistency of the squads that have been together now for years, the way they increased their potential in the squads, the understanding between players, quality they have brought, for sure it’s going to be the most difficult.” This evaluation highlights the crowded and competitive field that teams will face as they seek to find success within.
In looking back at his own team’s success, Arteta was mindful of their businesslike manner. “We need more points, that’s clear. Over that stretch we’ve earned more points than any other team in the Premier League. In spite of this accomplishment we have still not lifted the Premier League trophy. That just means we’ve gotten a lot of stuff wrong in all the right ways … which is good,” he continued. This acknowledgement of historical performance is an opportunity to recognize where we’ve come from, as well as where we want to go with positive, aspirational progress.
Arteta commented on areas where his team can enhance their performance: “We missed a few points in one of the seasons, and that’s what we’re going to try to do to be better.” This improved focus on growth shows they are dedicated to taking the lessons learned from earlier efforts and working to fill in improvement gaps that could threaten performance success.
Beyond those tactical considerations, Arteta was quick to recognize the influence of individual players on his squad. He remarked on a standout player’s goal-scoring abilities, sharing, “When you look at his goalscoring record, we haven’t had a player that has scored that many goals in the last two seasons. Which is why that killer instinct is so impressive. It’s that special talent and instinct inside the box that lets players receive the ball, turn and finish. This simple recognition serves to highlight just how important key players are in making sure that these big team goals are realized.
The recruitment process has been absolutely key to Arteta’s strategy as well. He expressed enthusiasm for new signings: “That’s the recruitment process, that’s one of the things I was most interested in.” His willingness and ability to be proactive in creating a more competitive team speaks to his awareness of the need to always be improving.
Teammate Martin Odegaard added his perspective on adapting to challenges, stating, “It’s always different and you have to adapt.” This insight speaks to the dynamic nature of football and the importance of resilience among players as they face varying circumstances throughout the season.
Sky Sports provides incredible wall-to-wall coverage that has fans hooked from start to finish. Clubs looking to survive are preparing for what many predict will be one of their most difficult campaigns ever. The sports broadcaster has a long-standing commitment to providing comprehensive match coverage. This commitment acknowledges a growing public base eager for quality, deep-dive reporting and exciting live competition.
