Shedeur Sanders, the former 23-year-old quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, stunning the NFL. His playing debut was nothing short of magical on the night of August 9, 2025. This long awaited breakout came in a meaningless preseason game against the Carolina Panthers. As the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, who currently serves as head coach for the Colorado Buffaloes, Shedeur’s debut attracted significant attention from fans and sports figures alike.
In fact, during his first professional appearance, Sanders Pagan quite literally set the soccer field on fire. He was 14 for 23 for only 138 yards in a little less than three quarters worth of action. His performance, which included two passing touchdowns, opened eyes across the league as he emerged as a potential rising star.
Sanders opened the scoring with a 7-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kaden Davis at the start of the second quarter. He quickly widened his team’s lead with a second touchdown. This go-around, he connected with Davis as he snuck behind the secondary for a 12-yard touchdown just before the half. Despite the adversity, including being sacked twice on the final drive, Sanders kept his cool and showed why he is an absolute stud with a clutch performance.
This significance of this debut was felt far beyond the soccer pitch. His father, Deion Sanders, took to social media to express his pride and support, posting videos of his son’s incredible accomplishments.
“Super happy for [@ShedeurSanders]! You can try to break a young fella’s spirit but you can’t touch his talent! Do the damn thing Shedeur!!!” – Dawn Staley
Social media exploded as jubilant fans and all-star athletes, like LeBron James, expressed amazement at the unexpected action. LeBron James, star player of Los Angeles Lakers, praised Sanders’ performance on Twitter as well.
“That young looking good out there! Keep going UP!!! HEAD down on the grind and HEAD high to the most high,” – LeBron James
James echoed the importance of recognizing Sanders’ contributions, even if it was only a preseason game. He called on everyone in Hornet Nation to support Sanders as he begins his professional career.
“And I don’t wanna hear that ‘It’s only preseason’ bs. Cause if he was out there not going in y’all would be on his ass about it! So give credit and grace lames,” – LeBron James
Looking back on his debut, Shedeur Sanders said it was “perfect timing,” an assertion he doubled down on in his recently released music single. He recognized the pressure of promise but continued to stay true to delivering for those who fought, knocked, walked and believed for him.
“That’s love. … I’m playing for a lot of people and a lot of beliefs,” – Shedeur Sanders
Shedeur Sanders, like his talent, has moved up the ladder from Jackson State Tigers to Colorado Buffaloes. Now, he is set to start on what should be an excellent career in the NFL. Particularly his debut, which proved his quality as an exciting young quarterback. That was no doubt a deeply meaningful moment with his family, particularly his father, who has been the compass of this young man’s football journey.
