On Sunday, Shedeur Sanders didn’t just make history. He tackled that obstacle, too, becoming the first Cleveland Browns quarterback in three decades to win his first start. He led the Browns to a 24-10 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, demonstrating impressive skills and composure throughout the game. As for what this performance means, it’s an exciting milestone for Sanders, who was taken with the 144th overall pick this past April.
In his first start, Sanders was 11 of 20 for 209 yards with one touchdown and one interception. His efforts not only ensured a win for the team but supercharged his fellow teammates who were singing his praises for his sudden performance. Coach Kevin Stefanski commended Sanders for his calm demeanor under center, highlighting the young quarterback’s potential for growth.
Though the performance was a masterpiece, Sanders isn’t taking any laurels yet. Despite the success, he admitted that he’s still “for sure not comfortable” heading into his second start. Sanders has always been about wanting to play above the line and play better every week.
“I’m definitely not comfortable, though, so that’s first and foremost that I have another opportunity to go out there,” – Shedeur Sanders
After starting the year as the Browns’ fourth-string quarterback, Sanders cut his teeth in a QB room with three other experienced quarterbacks. From there he shot up to the top of the leaderboard. It was an impressive surge, especially considering he was practicing with the starting offense for the first time just last week. He said his rapport with the rest of the team is getting better, which is an encouraging sign as we head towards regular season competition.
Looking forward, Sanders will take on the San Francisco 49ers in his next start. So he took an honest but unflinching approach to the task at hand. Most importantly, he is excited to continue learning and growing in his new role.
“So I’m never comfortable in a situation I’m in. I always want to exceed expectations, and I always want to grow in each and every week,” – Shedeur Sanders
The Browns’ coaching staff remains optimistic about Sanders’ trajectory. But after the game, Coach Stefanski announced that he would retain his position as starting quarterback. Of course, Gaur at times still feels the sting, but he has faith.
As Sanders looks ahead to the following game, he continues to keep an eye on day-to-day progress.
“Day by day, minute by minute, meeting by meeting, of course,” – Shedeur Sanders
