Shedeur Sanders, the exciting young star QB of the Cleveland Browns, about to break out. He’ll make his debut on the field in Saturday’s preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams. Sanders downplayed the quarterback controversy created earlier this week by comments from his teammate Dillon Gabriel. Instead, he focused on preparing to play the game.
Sanders, too, was a fifth-round pick. Today, he’s getting ears perked as much as kasper as one of this season’s highest-profile NFL rookies. He’s back on the field now, having returned to team drills after missing joint practices with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was sidelined for last week’s preseason game as well due to a strained oblique. Coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that barring any setbacks, Sanders would play third on the depth chart behind Joe Flacco and Gabriel.
In a Twitch stream interview before last week’s game, Dillon Gabriel said some things that people took offense at. Later, Gabriel went up to Sanders to explain that his comments were not intended for the young man. Sanders marked the experience, admitting that he talked deeply with Gabriel about it.
“If it’s not words or anything at this point, it can’t do anything to me. I know that God put the ability and the power within me to not even think about nobody else’s comments, not care. It is what it is. I spoke with him. He told me on the plane. He came up, he was like, ‘Nah bro, that wasn’t at you.’ … I’m not tripping, regardless of whatever it was. Nobody’s words or anything affects me.” – Shedeur Sanders
Sanders reiterated his confidence about his health on Thursday after getting back on the campaign trail.
“Do I feel like he did? I don’t know. And that’s not on me to sit here and be like, ‘Oh, he did; he didn’t.’ That’s not going to change my life in any way.” – Shedeur Sanders
As for the game’s lineup, Coach Stefanski is optimistic about Sanders’ return to action. The Browns prepare to strike their final roster before the start of the regular season. Sanders’ play in this game should provide him career experience, as he continues to navigate his rookie season.
“Everything’s good,” he said, indicating that he feels ready to compete.
Kenny Pickett will miss Saturday’s game due to a persistent hamstring injury. In the meantime, both Sanders and Gabriel will have the opportunity to show what they can do with their talents on the field.
While Kenny Pickett will not participate in Saturday’s game due to a lingering hamstring injury, both Sanders and Gabriel will have opportunities to showcase their skills on the field.
“Yeah, it’s just part of it. You know, there’s entertainers and there’s competitors, and I totally understand that. But my job is to compete. And that’s what I’m focused on doing.” – Dillon Gabriel
