Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders, a fifth-round draft selection, is determined to solidify his position as the team’s starting signal-caller. Even after recently assuming the starting job on a permanent basis, he’s still more focused on getting better than he is on resting on his laurels. The highly touted young quarterback can’t wait to prove everybody wrong and show what he’s capable of doing on the field.
Last week, Sanders was impressive in his first NFL start, especially before a raucous crowd on the road against the Las Vegas Raiders. He went 11 for 20 with 209 yds, one td and one int, helping to lead the 24-10 victory. He displayed excellent playmaking ability with eye-popping throw-everybody-open deep shots. Along the way, he showed the ability to waste time while still working the ball downfield. These qualities have jumped off the screen to the Browns evaluators.
Looking forward, Sanders should make his first start again this week against the San Francisco 49ers. She could have no idea how important this chance might be. What’s on the line here? He understands that how he performs can ultimately decide if he’s chosen to be the team’s starter for the rest of the season.
“I’m definitely not comfortable, though, so that’s first and foremost that I have another opportunity to go out there.” – Shedeur Sanders
Sanders remains undeterred, even with the steep learning curve that comes with being a first-time starter. He welcomes the raw, nasty elements of Cleveland, bending but never breaking. His previous experience playing at Colorado has prepared him for various weather situations, as noted by head coach Kevin Stefanski.
“He played at Colorado. That’s a lot of wind that you’re going to get. You’re going to get all sorts of weather. So he’s good to go.” – Kevin Stefanski
For Sanders, staying on top of his game isn’t enough. He’s committed to getting better every day. His idea of personal development or personal mastery involves getting better each week. This commitment makes him a better player, but more importantly, it makes the team better.
“So I’m never comfortable in a situation I’m in. I always want to exceed expectations, and I always want to grow in each and every week. I would want to put a better product of myself, be a better version of myself for the team to be out there.” – Shedeur Sanders
The Browns would be willing to give Sanders a long enough leash to see if he can develop into their long-term starter. He had a great week in practice, getting starter’s reps for the second time this year. This rousing performance has certainly improved his case to earn even more faith and trust from the coaching staff and Cowboys Nation alike.
Head coach Stefanski sounded confident that Sanders was committed to changing as well as learning to communicate better with coaches and teammates.
“Very committed to working at it, doing a great job, communicating with coaches, with the players.” – Kevin Stefanski
