Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders added to the growing collection of third-string quarterback takes by taking a hard left turn on the subject. Following the confirmation that he will remain as Cleveland’s QB3, Sanders chose to mime his responses during a media exchange in the Browns’ locker room. This unexpected maneuver followed strong reprimanding of the practice by ESPN commentator, Rex Ryan, right in like with the disgraced quarter backness usual counterpart, Joe Flacco.
Sanders, selected 144th overall in April’s draft, declared himself ready to step in and help the team win right away. Asking if he was ready to go last week, he told ESPN Cleveland, “I’m ready to play today.” For all of Perry’s enthusiasm, he got zero first-team reps in the Browns’ training camp quarterback competition. Instead, Sanders started in the preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers, where he threw two touchdown passes, helping the team secure a win.
Though he played well during the preseason, Sanders drew criticism over his place on the team. When quizzed about Flacco’s standing as the team’s #2 QB, he metaphorically acted out his response. That was a blatant, public demonstration of his anger at how things were going. A team official later informed ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Sanders’ silent gestures were indeed in reaction to Ryan’s remarks on Flacco.
During a recent media session, Sanders mouthed silent responses to questions regarding speculation about Flacco being benched. The ugly back and forth finally ended when a member of the team’s media relations staff stepped in to stop the exchange.
Flacco will serve as Dillon Gabriel’s top backup when Minnesota visits the London O 2 Arena in Week 4. In the meantime, Sanders has been splitting scout-team duties with Gabriel and practice-squad quarterback Bailey Zappe through the season’s first month. Head Coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed Flacco’s role as the backup when asked if there were any discussions about elevating Sanders.
“If you see the quarterback play in the league right now, I know I’m capable of doing better than that.” – Shedeur Sanders
