Shawn Kemp Pleads Guilty to Assault Charge Following Incident in Seattle

Former NBA star Shawn Kemp, known for his “Reign Man” moniker and electrifying dunks, has pled guilty to second degree assault. He made his plea before a judge in Pierce County Superior Court in Tacoma. The 55-year-old basketball legend first made waves as a six-time NBA All-Star as a member of the Seattle SuperSonics from 1989 to 1997. That cost him financially and politically this year after his actions at an August 2020 protest led to serious legal consequences.

On March 8, 2023, Kemp’s rig was raided while he was at a concert at an iconic Seattle venue. The heist featured a bevy of high-class personal property. These items ranged from an employee’s purse, business keys for Kemp, a cellphone, important paperwork to valuable sports memorabilia. Among the stolen memorabilia were game-worn jerseys belonging to both Kemp and fellow former player Gary Payton, which were intended for auction to benefit charity.

Upon finding the intruder, Kemp didn’t hesitate. He challenged the driver of one 4Runner that had been trolling the casino parking lot. His work then was compounded by frustration as the vehicle fled the scene. Days later, authorities found the abandoned 4Runner, where an empty holster was discovered inside, though no gun was ever found.

Kemp’s first meeting with the driver resulted in an arrest for first-degree assault with a firearm increase. In immediate reaction to the protests, prosecutors filed a second assault charge, which included a drive-by shooting. Eventually, because of all this pressure, Kemp did agree to a plea deal, in which he pled guilty to second-degree assault. Under this plea agreement, he’s prohibited from having guns. In addition, he’d have to submit a sample for a law enforcement DNA database.

Kemp started the basketball portion of his stellar career when he made his NBA debut in the 1989-90 season. He was only 20 years old at the time. Most impressively, he had never played college ball before making the jump to the pro ranks. Throughout his career, Kemp played for the Seattle SuperSonics and for teams in Cleveland, Portland, and Orlando. He became famous for his spectacular dunks and playmaking skills, and as a result secured an iconic legacy in the sport.
