Shane Burger, batting instructor for the Somerset County Cricket Club, today announced he will resign from the team. The decision comes on the heels of a successful interim tenure that began in January 2023. In this period, Burger was instrumental to the club’s success. He announced this news through the Somerset club website, saying he was proud of what the team has built together.
Burger, the former head coach of Scotland is now with Somerset. Under the terms of the last agreement he initially signed a contract that will carry through the end of 2026. At 43 years old, he is a veteran of cricket, but he’s preparing to introduce even more excitement into the English domestic cricket scene. During his time at Somerset, he saw extraordinary success. He then took the team to three consecutive Vitality Blast finals, winning two of those championships.
Reflecting on his experience, Burger stated, “We’ve achieved so much in the last three years.” His leadership and coaching skills truly accelerated the players’ skillsets. Each of these magical projects deepened the culture and values that now lie at the heart of Somerset County Cricket Club.
Andy Hurry, Somerset director of cricket, hailed Burger’s contribution to the squad. He noted that Burger’s “professionalism, expertise, and passion” significantly improved the players’ skills and contributed to a strong team culture.
In that capacity, Burger had the opportunity to be an assistant coach in Taunton. He was largely responsible for bringing through the young talent and the winning mentality of the squad. His exit signals a crucial time of transition for Somerset as they look to capitalize on the platform he helped lay.
Burger is at the threshold of an exciting new chapter in his career. It’s not just his own excellence and determination, but the exceptional legacy that he leaves behind in Somerset. The club now has the unenviable task of finding a successor who can build upon the momentum he established.
