Their welcome visitor on Thursday night, though, was home-conned Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s burgeoning megastar. Atop the float, he was met with a raucous welcome. In an outdoor, public stadium packed with ecstatic fans, his own Mayor Andrea Horwath proudly handed him the key to the cultural capital of Canada. She announced wonderful plans to rename a Westside street in his honor. This special day and celebration is another monumental recognition of Gilgeous-Alexander’s achievements while highlighting his profound connection to the community.
The culmination of the celebration was its most exciting highlight. Gilgeous-Alexander kicked off the second quarter of a Canadian Football League (CFL) matchup between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the B.C. Lions. The atmosphere in the stadium that day was absolutely electric as fans cheered on their local hero and a wonderfully entertaining game.
Gilgeous-Alexander finished off his exceptional season in style, carrying the Oklahoma City Thunder to an NBA championship. His historically great performance for the regular season was enough to win him the NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) award as well. In his farewell remarks, he touched on the pride he had in representing Hamilton every step of the way.
