A severe winter storm swept across New Orleans on Tuesday, paralyzing the city and forcing the postponement of the highly anticipated Milwaukee Bucks and New Orleans Pelicans NBA game. The storm, which dumped about a foot of snow, made road travel perilous and led to widespread closures. The game, initially scheduled for Wednesday night at the Smoothie King Center, was postponed to an unspecified date by the NBA.
New Orleans found itself ill-equipped to handle the unexpected snowfall, with minimal snow-clearing resources at its disposal. As temperatures lingered in the 30s on Wednesday, many main highways were closed by authorities, and surface roads remained coated in treacherous ice. The storm's impact was further amplified by the closure of Louis Armstrong International Airport, which canceled all commercial departures for the day.
The Milwaukee Bucks had arrived in New Orleans a day earlier than usual, on Monday, in preparation for their game against the Pelicans. However, with the city at a standstill, it remains uncertain whether the team will have to wait until Thursday—the day of their scheduled game against the Miami Heat—to fly out of New Orleans. Meanwhile, schools and businesses throughout the area were forced to shut down on Wednesday as the city grappled with the storm's aftermath.
The Smoothie King Center, the venue for the postponed game, boasts a seating capacity of 18,000. The Pelicans are now preparing for their next match on Friday night in Memphis, while both teams await updates on when their rescheduled game will take place.
