Serena Williams Joins WNBA Expansion and Champions Flag Football Growth

Serena Williams has officially become a minority owner of the new WNBA expansion franchise in Toronto, marking a significant step in her involvement with professional sports. This news comes on the heels of her historic role as a part owner of the Miami Dolphins. As someone who has been deeply engaged in that position since 2009. Williams’ entry into the ownership ranks of women’s basketball highlights her commitment to women’s sports.

That’s perhaps why NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell recently showered Williams with warm praises during NFL league meetings. He dubbed her “the GOAT” (Greatest of All Time) and pointed to her profound knowledge of women’s sports, business and society. He added that her vision is irreplaceable. The NFL would love to branch out and gain influence in other athletic spaces as well.

On Sunday, Williams was involved in a remarkable panel discussion at the NFL’s owners meetings. She spoke unequivocally about the great future and opportunities to grow women’s sports. In addition to their innovations, the NFL is currently swooning over the idea of establishing independent professional flag football leagues—one for men and one for women. This great initiative will help introduce new fans and grow the game globally. The NFL has more than 750,000 kids in its youth flag football league across the country. Each of its 32 franchises not only passively supports but actively sponsors their own leagues.

Flag football ranks as one of the fastest-growing sports across the U.S., and it has seen a surge in young female athletes. By 2023, an estimated 500,000 girls aged 6 to 17 were playing in flag football leagues. This was a whopping 63% raise since 2019! This increase is a testament to the growing popularity of the sport with young women. It makes a big show of its potential to foster enhanced inclusion in competitive sport.

To further its Olympic ambitions, the NFL has thrown its considerable weight behind flag football, increasing the sport’s Olympic prospects. They are working to get it included in the 2028 Games! As a regular feature of this program, ten teams had recently submitted proposals. They plan to put their money into launching leagues of professional flag football for men and women. That the third bid round will be closing this week is a testament to the overwhelming interest in this emerging sector.

“It’s clear that there’s a lot of interest in the pro flag league,” Goodell remarked, reflecting on the enthusiasm surrounding this new venture.
