Sean Payton, now head coach of the Denver Broncos, signed on in March 23. He has a long and diverse career in the football industry going back 40 years. For future opportunities, he took a risk that many young Americans would never consider and moved to England to play quarterback for the Leicester Panthers, a life-changing decision to say the least.
His first professional stop came in 1988, when Sean Payton suited up for the Leicester Panthers, one of the teams in the Budweiser National League. Over the course of his six-month time abroad, he worked on serving as a player and a coach. He fondly recalls those days, saying, “We were treated great … I think [I have] a jersey somewhere, pictures. But more importantly, again, not the physical, it’s all the memories. That’s the thing that was the best part of it.”
Payton’s early football career featured a record-setting stint as quarterback at Eastern Illinois University, where he passed for over 10,000 yards. After college, he played a short stint as a replacement player for the Chicago Bears during the 1987 NFL players strike. After doing the same, he would transition to the Canadian Football League and join the Ottawa Rough Riders. From there, he took the field for two Arena Football League teams.
His love for the game didn’t stop once he entered the coaching ranks. Since 1999, Payton has served on the Pro Football Hall of Fame Board of Selectors. This diversity contributed to a remarkable feeling of kinship in their after-hours. For them, it was the love of the game, and the four [American-born players] were living in a house. We’d all go work out in the mornings, play a little golf, getting practice plans all developed,” he said.
Now back in the NFL—as head coach of the Denver Broncos—Payton has new challenges ahead. The Denver Broncos still have a date to look forward to at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as they’re scheduled to face the New York Jets.
