The commitment the Seattle Seahawks have made to Abigail Lucas has included a great deal of money. They committed to him with a three-year, $46 million extension before last season. The deal, which will average $15.33 million per season, puts Lucas at 13th in annual pay among right tackles in the NFL. At only 26 years of age, Lucas has become a very solid addition to the Seahawks. Drafted in the third round in 2022 NFL Draft, he’s been ruffling feathers ever since.
Lucas was part of a remarkable draft class that not only included him but produced starters for each of the first six selections. A dominant presence on the field, his performance as a rookie in 2022 highlighted just how good he can be. His trajectory took a serious hit when he suffered a serious right knee injury that required surgery in January 2024. This physical breakdown restricted him to only 13 contests over the last two years.
Seattle’s choice to extend Lucas is a clear endorsement of their belief in his ability to heal and rebound. General manager John Schneider has been notoriously selective themselves about granting contract extensions. Since joining the organization in 2010, Lucas is now, remarkably, only the second offensive lineman he has drafted to earn this honor. The first was Justin Britt in 2017.
Lucas was overjoyed to receive the extension and the faith the fellowship organization had placed in him. As he said himself, in his own words, “I honestly believe that this deal is a reflection of how much they believe in me.” He underlined the point by making clear his affection for the team and the Northwest when he stated, “I love this team, I love this organization.”
Even with all he went through in his recovery, Lucas didn’t give up. He described the process as “long and painful.” Today, though, he’s healthy, good and raring to go! His drive and commitment could not have been clearer, as he didn’t miss a single practice throughout training camp.
Fans and teammates alike have seen Lucas’s dogged determination up close. He was at all the spring practices open to reporters. This expression of devotion surely demonstrates his willingness to do whatever it takes to help this team become successful in the coming season.
