Seahawks Release Tight End Noah Fant After Three Seasons

Seahawks Release Tight End Noah Fant After Three Seasons

On Sunday, the Seattle Seahawks’ official website reported that the Seahawks announced they have parting ways with tight end Noah Fant. This decision all but concludes his three-year stint with the squad. The move comes at a time when it’s unclear what the future holds for him within the organization. This uncertainty arises from both his contract situation and his concerns with on-field performance.

That would have made Noah Fant a pretty expensive backup at $9 million in the last year of his two-year, $21 million contract. That sum was not guaranteed. The Seahawks, with no future plans to use him, are releasing him, saving them $9 million in actual cash. This move will create $8.91M in cap space. The team will take on $4.5 million in dead money due to this trade.

In Fant’s case, because of his time in Seattle, he failed to make a big enough impact. He ranked 20th in receptions among tight ends. He finished 21st in cumulative receiving yards over his three-year stay with the franchise. He tied for 38th in the stat among tight ends. This is a drop-off from his previous production during his tenure with the Denver Broncos.

The Seahawks first got Fant in their trade of Russell Wilson. That agreement shipped quarterback Russell Wilson to the Broncos. Drafted 20th overall out of Iowa in 2019, Fant was worth the selection’s value early in his career with Denver. He racked up 170 catches for 1,905 yards and 10 touchdowns in his first three years playing under Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton. His failure to do so in Seattle was a large part of why he was eventually let go.

The Seahawks are playing hard as they continue to turn over their roster. They further shored up the tight end position by selecting Arroyo in the second round with the 50th overall pick. On the field Arroyo’s playstyle has led to direct comparisons to Fant. This would indicate that the Seahawks are looking for a new direction at the position.

At 27 years old, Noah Fant now faces an uncertain future as he seeks to continue his NFL career elsewhere. His release from Seattle marks a notable transition for both the player and the team as they navigate changes in their roster.
