Geno Smith, the Seattle Seahawks’ starting quarterback, is poised for a pivotal offseason as he enters the final year of his contract. Smith, who set franchise records last season with 4,320 passing yards and a 70.4% completion rate, led his team through a challenging year. Despite taking 50 sacks—the third most in the league—Smith managed to lead four game-winning drives. However, his 15 interceptions in 17 games, compared to 21 touchdown passes, highlighted areas for improvement.
Smith's contractual situation has become a focal point for the Seahawks. With a salary of $31 million for the upcoming season and a roster bonus of $16 million due on March 16, his cap number stands at a significant $44.5 million. The team's management is expected to negotiate an extension with him during the offseason to ensure stability at the quarterback position.
Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald has expressed his desire for Smith to remain the team's starter beyond his current contract. In an effort to retain continuity and build on last season's achievements, Macdonald stated:
"We've had a lot of non-football conversations — to keep it legal — over the last month or so," – Mike Macdonald
Smith, at 34 years old, ranked 21st in Total QBR last season, indicating room for growth. The Seahawks' offense faced challenges with an overmatched line and inconsistent run game, which contributed to Smith's high sack numbers and occasional struggles.
The Seahawks are committed to addressing these issues and enhancing their offensive line and running game to support Smith's performance on the field. As they prepare for the upcoming season, securing Smith's future with the team remains a priority.
