Seahawks Prepare for Quarterback Competition as Trade Inquiries Emerge

The Seattle Seahawks seem prepared for a savage battle royale at quarterback. Part of the fun of having Howell before was the fact that Howell and Lock will still compete for the backup job. Seattle Sports 710-AM’s Mike Salk takes that a step further, saying the team is actively looking to replace Wilson at the QB position. They recently acquired Howell through trade with the Washington Commanders. In the spring, general manager John Schneider told us about Howell’s past struggles and what could be an overabundance of skill at the position.

In March, the Seahawks went out on a limb by trading for Howell. They traded their third- and fifth-round picks but received fourth- and sixth-round picks from Washington in exchange. Howell began all 17 games for the Commanders last season, taking every snap in each contest. His 21 touchdowns were great but unfortunately, he led the league in interceptions (21). Schneider noted that Howell faced significant difficulties during his time with the Commanders, stating, “Sam was put in a very hard spot last year.”

The signing of Lock, whose contract is fully guaranteed for two years and $5 million, further complicates the position. Schneider emphasized that this move does not limit the Seahawks’ options in the upcoming draft, saying, “the addition of Drew Lock doesn’t preclude us from doing anything in the draft.”

Eighth-round quarterback Jaren Hall was brought into the fold to be this room’s fourth man. Now they can boast of having had four future Hall-of-Famers at that position. This can’t-defend-it negative has been a reoccurring theme in escaped offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak’s game plans. From his time with the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints, he favored keeping three QBs on the roster. Schneider has praised Howell’s mobility, noting that it aligns well with Kubiak’s offensive style, which emphasizes bootlegs.

“I think all of us, Sam included, would say, OK, last year is just a wash, man. Let’s put that aside. Let’s get back in a pro-style system, a proven system because he can move.” – John Schneider

The Seahawks have reportedly made Howell available, fielding calls on Howell from several teams looking to trade for him. Howell has been touted in recent reports as a surprise favorite to establish himself as the Commanders’ No. 2 quarterback behind Jacoby Brissett. His contract reportedly only has $2.25m of it guaranteed, according to OverTheCap.com.
