In anticipation of the upcoming Ryder Cup, world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler has adopted a refreshed approach following the United States’ disappointing performance in 2023. Furthermore, the Ryder Cup will be played on the historic Bethpage Black course. Scheffler — the first-time captain — is certainly focused on getting his whole squad as ready as possible for battle against Europe. As he underlined, “There’s no urgency to do anything heading into the Ryder Cup. This showcase of resolve speaks volumes to his commitment to hone his craft while not trying to overexert himself.
Keegan Bradley, captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup team, called Scheffler’s ego-less attitude refreshing. He continued to double-down on this unique quality that makes Scheffler different from the rest of the field. Scheffler is best when the pressure’s highest, Bradley noted. He continued, “I think he wants the tie to go down to him in singles play… I would not be shocked if that’s what he’s dreaming about! It really makes Scottie different from everybody else.”
Looking back on his experience from the last Ryder Cup, Scheffler said he felt heartbroken. He remembered, “When I look back at the ‘23 Cup, I think of halving two matches and losing two there. I came out of there with not one win and that stung a lot. He really felt and took to heart that for the event he had prepared himself as a rookie. He saw this as a real learning experience.
Scheffler has been strategically preparing for this year’s matches at Bethpage Black since the conclusion of the Open Championship in July. He emphasized the importance of competition in his preparation, stating, “You can practice and do all you can at home, but there’s something different about playing competition, getting ready for a tournament.” This attitude is indicative of his strong approach towards perfecting his game and making himself totally prepared for what lies ahead.
Keegan Bradley was right not to pick himself. Perhaps most importantly, he focused on the role of team dynamic and group cohesion in making his choice. His choice is a testament to selflessness that reflects Scheffler’s mindset when it comes to working with your teammates and playing for the greater good.
Scheffler arrives at this Ryder Cup overflowing with confidence in his preparation. He’s looking forward to playing his best game on the course! In particular, he’s lauded Bradley for his work organizing and energizing the craft. He feels that these will be Rickie’s actions most vital to their success against the Europeans.
