Scott O’Neil Takes Helm at LIV Golf Amidst Changing Landscape

In a significant leadership change, Scott O'Neil has been appointed as the new CEO of LIV Golf, replacing Greg Norman. The announcement marks a new era for LIV Golf as O'Neil steps in with an impressive track record, previously serving as CEO of the parent company of the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers and the NHL's New Jersey Devils. O'Neil's extensive experience also includes roles as president of Madison Square Garden and CEO of Merlin Entertainments Group, a major player in the amusement park and resort industry.

Rory McIlroy, who has been a vocal critic of LIV Golf in the past, praised O'Neil's credentials. McIlroy acknowledged that Greg Norman's departure is "probably a good move" for LIV Golf, now that the organization is established. McIlroy also noted that LIV Golf is not disappearing "anytime soon," indicating a shift in his perspective.

"He has got the right credentials to take over a sports league. I think for LIV it is probably a good move now they are established." – Rory McIlroy

The transition comes after a public feud between Greg Norman and Rory McIlroy in 2022, during which Norman accused McIlroy of being "brainwashed by the PGA Tour." However, tensions between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour have eased, with both sides currently negotiating a "framework agreement."

"Greg took a lot of flak the first couple of years," – Rory McIlroy

Despite stepping down as CEO, Norman will remain involved with LIV Golf in an unspecified role. McIlroy commended Norman for his efforts in launching LIV Golf amid challenges, but expressed confidence in O'Neil's ability to lead the organization forward.

"He is probably one of the only guys in golf who could have taken on that role. He got it off the ground, and you have to commend him for that. Now it's time for someone with a bit more experience to take over." – Rory McIlroy

The recent exhibition match in December, where Scottie Scheffler defeated LIV members Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka, marked a collaborative effort between PGA Tour and LIV Golf stars. This event was the first of its kind and was attended by McIlroy, who also met with O'Neil. O'Neil further demonstrated his engagement with the sport by attending the inaugural night of TGL, a new simulator golf series founded by McIlroy and Tiger Woods.

Yasir Al-Rumayyan expressed confidence in O'Neil's leadership capabilities, emphasizing his vision for LIV Golf's future.

"has the passion, the tenacity and the vision to continue leveraging LIV Golf's position as a pre-eminent, global sports and entertainment company and to lead our amazing teams and players for years to come." – Yasir Al-Rumayyan
