Scotland’s women’s cricket team provided a thrilling example recently when they took on Papua New Guinea. They celebrated a historic first international win, a six-wicket success over Netherlands in the Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy in Bangkok. With this win, Scotland maintained its perfect record in the tournament, demonstrating both resilience and skill as they chased down a target of 119 runs.
Foul trouble left Scotland with no good options at the start of the third quarter. They required five runs off only four balls, highlighting the immense pressure the team was under. Rachel Slater had to be the villain-turned-hero, smacking the winning four runs from the second-last ball. She capped the triumph with a hard-fought win of 121-4 in only 19.5 overs.
That knock was more impactful than it maybe looks on the surface. Earlier in the innings, Sarah Bryce provided the anchor, scoring 39* off 29 balls. Her artistic collaboration with Megan McColl was fundamental. Collectively, they met that difficult task at a daunting 74-3, with McColl leading the way with 14 runs before being run out. Darcey Carter provided valuable support with a score of 30 runs, while Ellen Watson added 26 runs to the team’s total.
Chloe Abel’s outstanding bowling performance was key to Scotland’s success. She finished with five for 13. This meant Papua New Guinea faced a magical triple-wicket maiden that left PNG reeling. Her tremendous performance not only won her the state title, but praise from fellow competitors and coaches all around.
“It’s really nice to contribute to a nice win like that, but credit to the whole team, the batters did a really good job at the end.” – Chloe Abel
An early loss in the shape of opener Ailsa Lister left Scotland’s innings floundering and a clear sense of caution shaped the way forward. With Bryce and McColl stabilizing the innings, Scotland began to regroup and put together crucial partnerships that ultimately led to their victory.
Scotland continue to have a strong run in the Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy. This victory ends any doubts about the Golden Eagles’ standing as a legit powerhouse in this tournament. The players will hope to build on this high point as they gear up for their next round of matches.
