On Wednesday, Scotland’s cricketers were admirable in their fight, spirit and grit. They pulled off a memorable 44-run win against the Netherlands during their match in the Cricket World Cup League 2. The two sides met in an impressive stadium in the heart of Edinburgh. After a slow start, Scotland recovered superbly to post a massive total of 262 runs for 9 wickets off their 50 overs. This win represents Scotland’s 10th victory in their last 18 CWCL2 matches.
The Scottish innings of 132/7 included a top score of 37 from captain Kyle Coetzer. Finlay McCreath led the charge with an impressive 81 runs off 106 deliveries, while Mark Watt added a valuable 60 runs from 72 balls. Their partnership would go on to be incredibly important for their side as they paired together to create a cracking 91-run stand for the seventh wicket. This is in large part thanks to the key role of opening bowler, Safyaan Sharif. He finished 36 not out, coming in under pressure at 12 for two to rescue the innings.
Moving into the batting innings, Scotland’s bowlers were ruthless from the off. Brandon McMullen was especially dangerous, taking three wickets for just 40 runs. Safyaan Sharif helped him out nicely, with two for 18 off seven overs. The Netherlands, in their chase, managed to score 218 runs in 45 overs, with Levitt being the top scorer for his team with 35 runs. Jasper Davidson played a key part in the bowling attack, taking 2/18.
Scotland’s captain, Richie Berrington, reflected on the team’s performance after the match.
“We didn’t get off to the start we wanted, but the composure young Finlay McCreath showed today was great to see,” – Richie Berrington
Berrington admitted this wasn’t the most ideal of innings but was pleased with the depth the team showed.
“It’s not how we want our batting innings to unfold, but the pleasing thing is a few different people stood up,” – Richie Berrington
Scotland will meet Nepal once more on Sunday. They’re looking to continue their positive run of form and distancing themselves from the bottom of the league table. They will have another shot at the Dutch on June 12. This fixture will provide an opportunity to exact revenge after their surprise demoralising defeat to Nepal earlier this week.
