Scottie Scheffler stepped further into the role of favorite at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson. He took a healthy six-shot lead into the completion of the weather-delayed second round Saturday. Scheffler, the world’s no1, has put on a clinic this week. Combined with incisive tactical decision making, those skills have made him a favorite to claim his first victory at this unique and highly prestigious event.
Scheffler’s dominant performance stands out for his final score of 18-under par, thanks to two dazzling 10-under rounds. He opened the tournament with a blistering 10-under 61. When the second round began, he just kept going with a 63. The latter round was heavily disrupted by a six-hour weather delay. Scheffler proved to be undaunted and unflappable upon his return to golf action.
That is to say, this tournament is a career-defining moment for the 26-year-old Scheffler. He’s playing in his hometown of Dallas and going for his first ever win at the Byron Nelson. His highest finish in this tournament was four years ago when he once again shared ninth place. This year, he seems likely to do even better than that and take the award.
During the first two rounds, Scheffler was grouped with another Texan, two-time Masters champion and former University of Texas golfer Jordan Spieth. Local fans couldn’t have been more excited at the prospect of these two hometown favorites meeting. With such pride at stake, they demonstrated tremendous support by coming out en masse to yell for their teams.
As the tournament continues, all eyes will be on Scheffler – for good reason. His steady play and big cushion had him in a fantastic position going into the last rounds. Golf analysts and devotees are eager to see if he can continue this amazing streak. They’re anxious for him to pull off a celebration at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.
