The local favorite headed to a tough opening test at the Houston Open, which everyone was forced to deal with gusty winds and soaking rain. Top stars Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy entered the tournament, looking for a last-minute tune-up ahead of the Masters. Scheffler had to navigate inclement weather, with consistent rain pouring throughout the day. True to form, he took advantage of the break in the rain, using the time to enjoy a dramatic end to his round.
Preferred lies were used from the short grass because of the wet conditions, bringing a small measure of relief to the players. No one played the tough conditions better than Scheffler.
“Conditions were pretty tough out there today with the rain and the wind, so overall nice to keep a clean card.” – Scottie Scheffler
Rory McIlroy gave away multiple strokes during his first few holes, unable to find any semblance of a flow while the elements pummeled him into submission.
“Couldn’t really find the middle of the club face for the first few holes,” – Rory McIlroy
When conditions were marginally better, McIlroy adjusted and got into a rhythm, looking sharper as the front nine went on.
“Once it brightened up and as the conditions got a little better, I felt like I drove it pretty well.” – Rory McIlroy
Ryan Gerard started off really well and you really saw his strengths come to play. Going into the last two holes, he was already at an amazing 7 under. Keeping the conditions dry was a feat for him, as it backfired on him affecting his performance. Gerard finished his opening round with two bogeys, having begun play on the par-5 eighth hole.
“I’d be lying to you if I wasn’t a little bit upset,” – Ryan Gerard
Keith Mitchell showcased resilience despite early setbacks. After starting with bogey on two of his first four holes, he rallied beautifully. He ended with authority too, making an eagle on the last to beautiful walk-off stomping the day’s action.
