Jadon Sancho’s temporary move to Chelsea initially looked like an inspired piece of business. Now, an expensive permanent move is shrouded in uncertainty as the club’s fate hangs in the balance. Sancho had a good start, providing three assists in his first three Premier League appearances. His form has dropped off, creating concerns about his long-term viability at Stamford Bridge.
For Chelsea, the deal for Sancho is a loan too – with the obligation to buy Manchester United contingent on performance-related thresholds being reached. The negotiated fee for a permanent transfer is reported to be £25 million. A £5 million escape clause allows Chelsea to return Sancho to Manchester United, should they choose to avoid the obligation.
His success saw him earn a £73 million transfer to Manchester United in 2021. His path beyond that point has encountered many perilous twists and turns. His exit from Old Trafford came after an apparent bust-up with the ex-boss Erik ten Hag. Consistency has continued to hinder Sancho since arriving in the Premier League, leading to his current plight.
He’s been woeful in every outing since. He hasn’t been involved in a goal since January 4 and I think he’s had one shot on target since Boxing Day! Attempts to jumpstart his career at Chelsea have so far proven fruitless, with confidence proving an issue too.
Chelsea intends to make the deal for Sancho a permanent one when the summer transfer window opens. The introduction of a controversial £5 million get-out clause muddy the waters. The club now has a choice to make between pouring more time and money into developing Sancho or moving on to find new blood in the next window.
"For me he's doing very well. I am quite surprised with Jadon, because I knew Jadon already [from seeing him at his previous clubs] and I know what I expected from him, but in terms of being consistent, he's doing very well." – Enzo Maresca
Sancho’s current form is a far cry from his time at Borussia Dortmund. Once there, he regularly put on breathtaking spectacles. His battle with morale has stunted his growth on both Manchester United and Chelsea meaning the latter of which he just left on loan.
