The San Francisco 49ers are hoping quarterback Sam Jones can make his first NFL start in their next game on Monday Night Football. He’s going to be going up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team is losing important players to injury, leaving the staff with tough choices. This list features starting quarterback Brock Purdy, as well as wideout Ricky Pearsall.
Brock Purdy, the 49ers’ go-to quarterback this season, is still recovering from a shoulder injury. According to reports, he might be available for next week’s home matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. That would make every other piece of the team’s offensive strategy much tougher. In his absence, Jones has emerged as a solid number two receiving option, helping propel the Eagles to five straight wins.
Along with Purdy’s case, wide receiver Ricky Pearsall is still recovering from a MCL sprain. Like Purdy, Pearsall is hopeful for a return next week against the Falcons. His impact on the field has been sorely missed, as he is the most important piece of a relatively talented receiving corps.
Jones, despite early struggles and a midseason trip to the IR, displayed his toughness during his first campaign with the team. He fought through a notable knee injury to play a big role in last week’s win over the Los Angeles Rams. Unfortunately, he was injured with a late-game oblique injury. Despite all these challenges, Jones was ever so hopeful all week of his availability to start against the Buccaneers.
During Thursday’s practice, Jones was limited for the second consecutive day. That leaves some concerns about his status for next game. He’s appeared in three games for San Francisco this year. To his credit, in each of those contests, he hasn’t just played well, he’s helped lead the team to victory! His impressive performance thus far has inspired a new level of confidence from both his teammates and coaching staff.
It’s tough enough maintaining that kind of record in any season — let alone the listener’s choice of this season or last. Their success stems from an equally potent offense and defense. With Jones stepping into a crucial role and the potential return of Purdy and Pearsall next week, the team appears poised for continued success.
