Sami Valimaki of Finland made a strong case on Saturday, going 5-under 65 to contend at the RSM Classic. This accomplishment launched him to a two-shot advantage entering the tournament’s last-round play. Valimaki certainly demonstrated an amazing level of skill and precision. He closed with a 64 for 19-under 193, putting him in position to win for the first time on the PGA Tour.
Valimaki’s outstanding round included a number of highlight reel shots, particularly an eagle-birdie-birdie-birdie finish to the front nine starting on the fifth hole. He began his birdie blitz with a gain on the par-3 sixth hole. Then, with the world watching, he fired a shot that landed the ball within 12 feet of the pin. He found his rhythm, getting to the par-5 seventh in two and picking up another birdie there. It was an unbelievable play that highlighted his incredible long game genius.
On the par-4 eighth hole, Valimaki demonstrated his tremendous short game talents. His second shot was a wedge played to within 18 inches of the cup, giving himself an almost certain birdie. He continued his brilliant play on the ninth hole. He nailed a stunning approach shot that came within three feet of the cup. That incredible run of form ensured his place atop the very crowded race to the top leaderboard.
As Valimaki heads into the final round, here’s what he said about his experience during the tournament. He was a runner-up in last year’s Mexico Open as well. After tying for second at the World Wide Technology Championship just two weeks ago, he’ll be looking for the first win to put all of his talent to use.
“It’s just unfortunately in this game you can’t control the outcomes,” said Patrick Rodgers, highlighting the unpredictable nature of golf.
Throughout his set, Valimaki couldn’t help but pay attention to the crowd’s reaction. He noted, “I didn’t have a single clap this entire week — so I knew when I heard the claps, it must be pretty close,” humbly acknowledging excitement from the audience.
Other competitors are salivating at the chance to knock Valimaki off the top spot. He is still keeping a laser-like attention to staying limber and cool as the RSM Classic heads into an exciting finish. Riding the momentum of his recent successes and fighting spirit, Valimaki is poised to make history with his first PGA Tour win.
