Sam Szmodics, the accomplished midfielder for Ipswich Town, has made a remarkable recovery from injury and is eager to showcase his talents on the field. Szmodics had a very impressive 2023/24 campaign. He scored a remarkable 27 league goals and bagged the Championship Golden Boot! His incredible journey inspires the countless people who follow his story. His journey from League Two football just five years ago to becoming one of the most impactful players in the Premier League today is quite remarkable.
In a recent match against League Two side Bromley, Szmodics displayed his resilience by coming off the bench in the 74th minute, replacing Axel Tuanzebe. He was instrumental in their triumph in the penalty shootout. By scoring one of the sometimes decisive penalties, he contributed to sealing a 6-5 win on penalties for Kieran McKenna’s side. This display capped an emotional return to competitive football having overcome a serious injury lay-off suffered at the start of the season.
Szmodics had previously made a goal for himself growing up to play at least one match in the Premier League. On the opening day of the season, he was content to sit on the bench during Ipswich’s match against Liverpool at Portman Road, demonstrating his commitment to the team’s success over personal accolades. His efforts paid off when he scored against Fulham on January 5, further solidifying his place in the starting lineup.
His journey hasn’t come without difficulties. Szmodics suffered a nasty injury after coming in for a tackle with Calvin Bassey and there were some fears over his wrist. A follow-up MRI indicated no tears—her ligaments were fine. Unfortunately, during that fall, the deltoid ligament of his left ankle had completely ruptured, pulling a piece of its bony attachment off in the process. The injury was a blow, but Szmodics’ desire and willingness to work hard brought him back. He’s proving he’s still got it at an elite level once more.
I do not take for granted that I am 28 or 29 years old and have done that much. Getting to see my children watch me perform on that stage was truly impactful to me. I should be so lucky to get an opportunity like that again,” said Szmodics.
As he casts his eye forward, Szmodics harps on the pressure coming with Ipswich’s expectations of making a Premier League return as soon as possible. “Everyone’s desperate to get back to the Premier League, so we’ve got to do all we can to do that,” he remarked. Most importantly, he taught the value of striving for excellence each day without ever giving in to the pressure from the outside world.
“We know we’re a good team and I think it will be very disappointing if we’re not up there,” Szmodics stated, asserting his belief in the team’s potential. He added, “We know, if we work hard, we work together, we put in the performances we put in in the Premier League in the Championship, we’ll be absolutely fine.”
Simeon Gholam, another important figure inside the squad, confirmed Szmodics’s point about handling outside expectations and focusing on achieving great things. “Of course there’s pressure from the outside. Everyone’s expecting us to bounce straight back up,” Gholam stated. He cautioned to not lose sight of day to day operations. In doing so, they would eventually be serving the purpose of letting the football mostly take care of itself.
Ipswich Town’s squad exemplifies the work to be done by establishing and maintaining camaraderie and collective determination. They’re intent on getting back to the Premier League and reclaiming their status as one of the dominant powers of England’s top division. Gholam believes they have what it takes to achieve these aspirations: “Let’s go and put on a show and be the best team in the league. I think we’ve got a really good Premier League team, let alone a Championship team.”
Szmodics is looking forward to the trip to Palermo. He remains focused on individual goals, but is equally committed to carrying Ipswich toward collective success. “It’s just not putting too much pressure on yourself and not looking too far ahead,” he advised. That state of mind reflects the tempered ambition and realism that will carry him through this make or break chapter of his life.
