Sam Darnold’s dream season with the Minnesota Vikings took a sudden downturn over the last two weeks, casting uncertainty over his future with the team. After leading the Vikings to an impressive 14-win season, Darnold’s performance faltered, culminating in a record-tying sack total during Monday’s postseason game. Despite throwing for a career-high 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns this season, Darnold’s recent struggles have left both the quarterback and the organization at a crossroads.
Darnold signed a one-year contract with the Vikings, hoping to capitalize on his potential for long-term success. However, his disappointment was palpable as he faced a relentless defense on Monday night, resulting in nine sacks that tied an NFL postseason record. Reflecting on the game, Darnold acknowledged his errors, stating, "I felt like there were a lot of sacks that I was responsible for, where I was just holding onto the football and taking sacks where I could have dirted it at someone's feet or simply thrown it over someone's head."
Coach Kevin O'Connell, while recognizing Darnold's overall achievements this season, pointed out that opportunities were missed during critical moments. He remarked, "There were some completions to be had," emphasizing the importance of maintaining forward momentum in gameplay. O'Connell advised, "You've got to find a way to check the ball down and just keep moving the ball forward. Completions have negative effect on defenses. They just do. Those moments when you're holding that ball, and your reaction is try to make a play."
The past eight days have been particularly challenging for Darnold, with a combined total of 23 off-target throws and 11 sacks. This string of difficulties raises questions about his decision-making under pressure. Darnold himself admitted to making an "in-the-moment decision" during the game, attempting to evade a sack without successfully releasing the ball.
Despite these setbacks, O'Connell remains supportive of Darnold's capabilities and contributions throughout the season. He stressed, "It's very important that we all think about Sam's body of work," highlighting the significance of evaluating his entire performance rather than focusing solely on recent shortcomings.
As Darnold approaches free agency, his future with the Vikings remains uncertain. The organization will rely heavily on O'Connell's judgment in determining whether to re-sign Darnold or utilize their franchise tag to retain him for 2025. This decision comes as Darnold heads toward free agency with his prospects as unsettled as ever.
