The New Orleans Saints are poised to bring Doug Nussmeier on board as their new offensive coordinator. Nussmeier, a seasoned coach with extensive experience in both college and professional football, will take on this role in the upcoming season. Known for his quarterback coaching prowess, Nussmeier has previously worked with notable teams such as the Philadelphia Eagles and Alabama Crimson Tide. His strong ties to the area and a prior professional relationship with Kellen Moore, who will handle the offensive play-calling for New Orleans, have positioned him as a fitting candidate for the Saints.
Doug Nussmeier, now 54, began his professional football journey when the Saints selected him in the fourth round of the 1994 draft. As a former quarterback, he spent four seasons in New Orleans before having brief stints with the Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, and Chicago Bears. Transitioning to coaching, Nussmeier made significant contributions at the collegiate level, serving as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for institutions like Fresno State, Washington, Florida, Michigan, and Alabama. His leadership was instrumental in guiding Alabama to a national championship victory in 2012.
Nussmeier's expertise extends into the NFL realm, where he most recently served as the quarterbacks coach for Jalen Hurts with the Philadelphia Eagles. His performance earned him a promotion to the Eagles' passing game coordinator and associate head coach, filling the role previously held by Kellen Moore.
"I think he's an outstanding coach who played the position at a very high level in the NFL and in big-time college football," said Nick Sirianni.
In addition to his coaching pedigree, Doug Nussmeier's familial connections to football remain strong. His son, Garrett Nussmeier, currently serves as the starting quarterback at LSU, showcasing a family tradition of excellence in the sport.
Nussmeier's appointment is seen as a strategic move by the Saints, leveraging his vast experience and established rapport with Kellen Moore to invigorate their offensive strategies. His history of successful collaborations with Moore at various stops, including Philadelphia, adds another layer of synergy to this new chapter.
"I just think he's done a really nice job of coaching Jalen and coaching the other guys. I think he's fit in really well with our staff. Obviously, he and Kellen have a prior relationship," noted Nick Sirianni.
