Saints Set to Decide Starting Quarterback in Coming Days

Kellen Moore named Taysom Hill as Saints starting quarterback, competition with Jameis Winston to be resolved soon. Look for a resolution in the coming days. Following their recent 28-19 defeat at the hands of the Denver Broncos on Saturday, Moore and his coaching staff will analyze game film. They’re going to talk about the quarterback position afterwards. The quarterback competition has very much become a dogfight between Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough. So, consider Jake Haener no longer in the running.

Moore said the key will be how well the team analyzes what happened in the preseason finale against Denver. This analysis will have a very big impact on their decision-making process. He talked a lot about the collaborative approach of these discussions, but highlighted the value that having different perspectives on the coaching staff brings to the table.

“I think it’s important that we collaborate and talk through this thing. That’s an important aspect of this thing. Everyone’s got their different perspectives and different exposures and so that would be really, really important,” – Kellen Moore

Spencer Rattler served as the starting quarterback during Saturday’s game, completing 5-of-8 passes for 43 yards without any touchdowns or interceptions. Through three preseason games, he has shown an eye-catching completion percentage of 69.8%. Through three games, he’s racked up 295 yards, one touchdown pass and one interception while being sacked four times.

Tyler Shough proved his worth in preseason, finishing 66.7% of his passes with 333 yards and 3 touchdowns. He tossed one touchdown pass and rushed for another score. He entered Saturday’s game in the second quarter, leading five drives, including a key possession early in the fourth quarter that concluded with an 11-yard touchdown run.

Shough reflected on his performance, stating, “What I put on tape continually throughout the ‘call it’ periods, throughout the games, just kind of the steady growth on the operation. I feel like it has been enough. I feel like I’m fully capable to go out there and lead the charge.”

Even with the competitive pressure, Rattler came off as extremely sure of his abilities. He claimed he’s as ready as he could ever be for the opportunity should he earn the starting gig. “That’s not my decision to make. I just try to put my best foot forward,” he commented.

Moore is not going stop there — he’s made his vision crystal clear. He’s not going to lure in an outside veteran QB to force the issue. The attention still centers on Rattler and Shough as they continue to compete for the above-mentioned starting job in a deeper, more competitive field.

As those conversations do amongst coaches, Moore said that it was very healthy discussions on both QBs. The Saints aim to solidify their choice as they head into the regular season, with anticipation building around who will take the helm as starting quarterback.
