The New Orleans Saints are wasting no time transitioning from the 2024 season to their offseason strategy. With an immediate focus on finding a new head coach, interim coach Darren Rizzi is set to interview for the position once again. Meanwhile, the New York Jets have expressed interest in speaking with Rizzi for their own head coaching vacancy. The Saints plan to make numerous personnel adjustments in the coming months, including re-signing key free agents such as tight end Juwan Johnson, defensive end Chase Young, and wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
The team's wide-reaching coaching search includes requesting interviews with former assistants like Aaron Glenn and Joe Brady. This initiative comes amid a backdrop of injuries that have impacted several players, with quarterback Derek Carr placed on injured reserve due to a fractured hand. Tight end Foster Moreau was also carted off with a knee injury in the season finale, while running back Alvin Kamara is rehabilitating a groin injury. Despite these setbacks, wide receiver Chris Olave is optimistic about his recovery, reporting no concussion symptoms and expressing eagerness to tackle the offseason.
Linebacker Willie Gay continues to rehab from a season-ending injury, and right tackle Ryan Ramczyk has made a significant financial decision by reducing his base salary to the veteran minimum, freeing up $16.47 million in cap space for 2025. The Saints have several players who will be undergoing rehabilitation for various injuries over the next few weeks or months. General manager Mickey Loomis will lead the coaching search, marking his third since his promotion in 2002. Additionally, some players will be restricted from making lateral moves to other teams.
"Guys that you've come to work with every day for the past 24 weeks… you don't know if you'll play with them or see them again," remarked Erik McCoy, reflecting on the transitional phase the team is entering.
The Saints are determined to address their salary cap situation promptly. "I'm a huge competitor, so I sat this year out just to be able to protect myself long term. I got a family and I want to be there for a long time, so just trying to protect myself. I feel like just playing football is something that brings me joy and I'm a huge competitor, so I just want to go out there and compete and have fun," Olave expressed.
Alvin Kamara's recovery from his groin injury appears to be progressing well, as he shared his experience of living pain-free after a period of rest and rehabilitation.
"I feel good. Woke up this morning, got out of bed. I wasn't in any pain, so obviously I ain't play yesterday, so I'm cool, living a pain-free life," Kamara commented.
