Saints Await Clarity on Carr’s Shoulder Issue

Things are more precarious for the New Orleans Saints. They’ve officially ruled out quarterback Derek Carr, who has a shoulder injury. NEW ORLEANS – General Manager Mickey Loomis took that injury head on at a predraft news conference. He sounded hopeful that the team will have more clarity on Carr’s status soon. Back in early April, we learned that Carr had an injury to his shoulder. This announcement was made mere days before the team was to begin its voluntary offseason workout program.

Carr’s absence from the team facility raises concerns, particularly since he played only ten games last season due to multiple injuries, including an oblique injury and a fractured hand. Loomis acknowledged the ongoing situation, stating, “He does have an issue with his shoulder. We’re hoping to get some resolution and clarity on that in the near future, and when we do, I’ll report back to you.”

The announcement comes at a particularly interesting time, with the Saints in possession of the ninth overall pick in next week’s draft. Loomis confirmed that the team’s drafting strategy would remain consistent despite Carr’s injury, saying, “I don’t think the draft approach is different for us than it would be in any year.”

Financially, Carr’s contract has implications for the team’s salary cap. His recent restructuring brought his 2025 cap hit down to just $20.4 million. That’s good but his 2026 cap hit is still a hefty $69.2 million. Carr has already guaranteed $40 million in salary and bonuses. That almost certainly assures he will be around in New Orleans for at least one more year.

Whatever is behind Carr’s mystery health issue will likely have an impact on what the Saints do in the draft and after as well. Loomis did not provide further details regarding Carr’s status during his remarks, leaving fans and analysts alike questioning how this might affect the team’s future plans.

While the Saints focus on bringing in new pieces as they move toward their offseason program, they are proving calculated and ruthless with other players. Loomis announced, “We are going to exercise the option on Chris and we’re not going to exercise the option on Trevor, but that doesn’t mean we don’t love Trevor and expect him to be part of our team going forward.” This announcement further illustrates their belief in walking that fine line between fielding a competitive team and honoring their ongoing financial commitments.
