In 2031, Spain will become the only nation to host the prestigious Ryder Cup for a second time. This is indeed a proud moment in the country’s abundant golf legacy. The competition will be hosted at Camiral Golf & Resort (formerly PGA Catalunya). It will showcase the indelible mark Spain continues to make on the global golfing stage.
Spain last hosted the Ryder Cup in 1997 at Valderrama Golf Club. There, the great Seve Ballesteros captained the European team to a stirring defeat of the United States 14 1/2 to 13 1/2. While this victory is a part of history, it has much to teach us today. It shined a spotlight on Ballesteros’s leadership and on Spain’s rising stature in the sport.
Spain has long played a major role in the Ryder Cup since its beginnings. It has featured at least one Spanish player on the European team in each edition of the event. Sergio Garcia is probably one of the more well-known Spanish golfers. As testament to his individual prowess, he is the all-time points leader in Ryder Cup history, with 28 1/2 points. On the other side, Spain’s Jon Rahm has become a European superstar in the past few formats of the team event.
The next Ryder Cup will be held on fairways of Spain’s beautiful Costa Brava. Throw in activities taking place in Barcelona and there’s even greater magic surrounding this world-class rivalry.
The relationship between the Ryder Cup and Spain dates back to 1979. That year, Seve Ballesteros and Antonio Garrido were among the first players from Continental Europe to join Europe’s team in the tournament.
Guy Kinnings, a prominent figure in golf administration, expressed his enthusiasm:
“The Ryder Cup has grown significantly since Spain last hosted it in 1997.” – Guy Kinnings
He further emphasized the significance of the upcoming tournament for Spanish golf, stating:
“Today’s announcement not only recognizes Camiral as one of Europe’s leading venues, but also the considerable contribution Spanish golf has made to the proud history of the Ryder Cup.” – Guy Kinnings
As preparations begin for this historic event, Spain aims to deliver an unforgettable experience that honors its rich golfing tradition while welcoming new generations of fans. Spain has incredible golf and a marvelous history with legends such as Ballesteros, Garcia, and Rahm. That, combined with the picturesque nature and key transportation links, makes it the ideal host to this prestigious tournament.
