Ryan Gerard scored the biggest victory of his career so far on Sunday, claiming the Barracuda Championship for his first PGA Tour triumph. This victory marked a huge accomplishment in Gerard’s career which he celebrated with this win. In doing so, he became the 999th winner in PGA Tour history – …in his 47th start!
The 25-year-old former North Carolina Tar Heel showed tremendous determination and talent throughout the tournament. He fought back from five bogeys and captured his win with a par. Gerard exploded for two blistering scoring runs throughout the round. He had two amazing seven-point runs, catapulting himself to 47 points total and a three-point victory over second-place Erik van Rooyen.
Gerard’s performance included remarkable moments, such as a 20-foot eagle putt on the par-5 third hole and a long 35-footer from the fringe on the par-5 11th. He furthered his distance with a strong eagle on the par-5 15th. Then, he made a huge 30-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th hole to extend his lead.
Even with his undeniable success, Gerard experienced struggles. He converted a five-foot birdie putt on No. 14, taking back points lost from back-to-back bogeys on Nos. He made a three-footer on 16 for a three-putt bogey to cool his heels a bit.
McNerney’s endorsement was the crowning touch on a victorious six-week run. In doing so, he played in the U.S. Open and made the journey over to Scotland. He had placed fifth in the same event two years earlier, foreshadowing his rapid rise to greatness amidst the tension of high-stakes competition.
Along with this biggest of career victories, Gerard punched his ticket into next year’s PGA Championship, but not the Masters.
He acknowledged that he had “left some shots out there the last few days unfortunately with the putter,” but remained proud of his overall fight throughout the tournament.
