Yorkshire County Cricket Club has signed Indian cricketer Ruturaj Gaikwad. He will be with the club for the last five games of their Division One season. The 28-year-old slugger also captains the Indian Premier League’s Chennai Super Kings and Maharashtra batters in the Ranji Trophy. He is due to make his debut for Yorkshire against Surrey in Scarborough on 22 July.
Gaikwad’s arrival could hardly be better timed for Yorkshire. They are keen to boost their squad for the last third of the County Championship season. Gaikwad is best known for his strong batting technique and outstanding leadership qualities. He has played a long international career as well as in the BPL and IPL. He has had the good fortune of representing India with pride in six One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 23 T20 matches. In all, he has played 29 white-ball matches for the national team.
Gaikwad had a serious elbow injury this year, forcing him to play just five matches in the IPL. Still, even with this misstep, he is a central figure on the team. He was recently included in the India A side for two four-day games against the England Lions. Sadly, he sat out both by non-injury “coach’s decision”. Gaikwad’s inclusion in the signing also means he will feature in New Zealand’s domestic One-Day Cup in August.
Yorkshire head coach Anthony McGrath was clearly excited at the thought of Gaikwad joining their ranks.
“I’m extremely pleased to see Ruturaj sign with us for the second half of the season,” – Anthony McGrath
Gaikwad’s records gives us strong basis and long leadership experiences. He has ambitious plans to make a big splash in his short stay with Yorkshire. His inaugural match will be important as the club searches to climb the table in Division One.
“He is a very accomplished cricketer with a natural all-round game that is well suited to the cricket we want to play.” – Anthony McGrath
As Gaikwad transitions from Indian cricket to the English county scene, fans and teammates alike will be watching closely to see how he adapts his game to English conditions. His international experience and domestic success make for a potent combination. This is what puts him head and shoulders above the rest as Yorkshire head towards the climax of their campaign.
