Russell Wilson, Sean Payton’s former star QB with the Denver Broncos, just threw his old coach – and the Saints’ record-holder for classlessness – under the bus. The feud between Payton and Wilson had reached new heights. This is quite an escalation from Payton’s remarks on Wilson’s benching earlier this 2023 NFL season and the past few weeks in the Broncos organization.
Sean Payton was the head coach of the New Orleans Saints from 2009–11. As a result of his extraordinary leadership, he earned fame far and wide during those days. His tenure was marred by grave scandal. He got pulled into a big scandal when he got caught up in a cash-for-hits bounty program run by then-defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. The scandal took a heavy personal toll on Payton. He incurred severe penalties, starting with his immediate suspension without pay for the whole 2012 season.
Wilson was traded to the Broncos in 2022 from the Seattle Seahawks. His time with the team was nothing short of disappointing. As a result, even as the unquestioned Week 1 starter over two seasons, he compiled just an 11—19 record, creating an up-and-down experience. The Broncos were the team snubbed from the playoff field. This led them to release Wilson ahead of the 2024 offseason, incurring $85 million in dead money.
In 2023, Payton sat Wilson on the pine in favor of rookie QB Jaxson Dart. Dart’s strong showing featuring four combined total touchdowns in a close win over the New York Giants has made some waves. Even with this extensive success, Wilson grew increasingly bitter about Payton’s choices. He voiced his concern over the Broncos’ earlier threats to bench him this season. This would be the case if he was to simply not waive the injury guarantee in his contract.
The situation intensified when Payton remarked on how he was looking forward to facing Wilson when the Broncos played against the Giants. Wilson’s jab was pointed. He argued that Payton’s actions were indicative of a deeper pattern of “bounty hunting,” as he called it, by the national media.
“Classless… but not surprised…. Didn’t realize you’re still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media,” – Russell Wilson
Payton has since defended himself, indicating respect for the Giants organization and acknowledging Dart’s recent performance. He underscored their longing for a coaching and quarterback change in their own Broncos organization. Though they had wanted this changing of the guard to occur following their game against the Giants.
“They found a little spark with that quarterback. I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said we were hoping that change would’ve happened long after our game.” – Sean Payton
As the NFL season progresses, both Wilson and Payton will continue to navigate their complicated relationship amidst ongoing scrutiny from fans and analysts. Their exchanges provide an unvarnished look at the heartbreaking obstacles athletes and coaches face. Yet they can’t let their personal grievances get in the way of their professional responsibilities.
