Russell Westbrook, the dynamic guard for the Denver Nuggets, has found a "gentle landing" in his tempestuous NBA career. Averaging 15.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 6.9 assists per game, Westbrook has been a key player alongside Nikola Jokic, contributing to the Nuggets' remarkable performance. The team currently holds the fourth-best record in the Western Conference, winning 12 of their last 15 games, thanks in large part to Westbrook’s energetic plays.
Westbrook's journey to Denver has been marked by frequent changes, having played for five different teams over the past six years, including stints with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Lakers. Despite these transitions, he remains a nine-time NBA All-Star and a former league MVP. His tenure with the Nuggets has been particularly rewarding, as he enjoys some of his best statistics in recent years.
"What I see with Russ is somebody who believed in him," said Anthony, commenting on Westbrook's resurgence.
The belief in Westbrook is reflected in his partnership with Jokic. The duo has made history by being the first in NBA history to record triple-doubles in the same game multiple times in a season. Jokic has assisted Westbrook the second most in the NBA this year, highlighting their effective collaboration on the court.
"I think Denver allowed him to be Russ… The minute they put him in that starting lineup, that showed me that they believed in him," Anthony added.
Westbrook’s move to Denver has also been a personal victory. He faced significant challenges while playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, where he received harsh treatment, including death threats and harassment of his family. Despite these adversities, he remains resilient and joyful.
"Coach is very honest with me on what he expected of me and what he wanted me to do, and, quite frankly, it’s to… be Russell Westbrook," Westbrook shared.
His infectious energy has invigorated Nuggets fans and his teammates alike. Recently, Westbrook scored an impressive 50-point game, demonstrating his enduring skill and passion for basketball.
"I would never let anyone take the joy away from me from playing basketball," Westbrook stated emphatically.
The joy he exudes on the court is palpable and serves as an inspiration to those around him. His positive demeanor contrasts sharply with the struggles he faced in previous teams.
"Or even more to the point, what if joy is not only entangled with pain, or suffering, or sorrow, but is also what emerges from how we care for each other through those things?"
Westbrook's playful nature extends beyond the court. After discovering that Jokic’s winning percentage when recording a triple-double is 5% higher than his own, he jokingly engaged with reporters.
His ability to uplift his teammates is one of his many strengths.
"Being able to do that allows me to be able to make guys around me better," Westbrook explained.
