Kevin Roy and Louis Potgieter displayed their amazing skills by both firing 62. It is no wonder their strong performance shot them to the top of the leaderboard at the Rocket Classic. The tournament was held at one of the most storied golf courses in America. Both players took complete advantage of their opportunities on the back nine, each firing a blistering 7-under 29.
Roy’s shining performance featured an eagle and eight birdies on a bogey-free card. He notably chipped in for eagle from 30 feet at the par-5 17th hole and followed it up by sticking his approach shot at No. 18 to just five feet for a final birdie.
“Just one of those days everything was clicking,” Roy commented following his round.
Potgieter matched Roy’s success, carding a 7-under 29 on the back nine. His round was just as phenomenal, a round that included an eagle and eight birdies – without a single bogey. After starting his round at No. 7, he trucked along and didn’t look back.
It was fierce competition as an impressive crop of talent showed off their stuff. Third round leaders Min Woo Lee, Max Greyserman and Mark Hubbard shot stellar rounds of 63. These players all tied the previous tournament record but were only one stroke short of leading the tournament.
Andrew Putnam made a big run at it and went 64 to close. Zach Johnson wasn’t too far off, as he played phenomenal golf, finishing only one stroke back. Collin Morikawa opened his tournament with a score of 69, and Keegan Bradley competed, though his specific score remains unreported.
Roy and Potgieter were simply exceptional, positioning themselves significantly ahead of the field. For that, their success has increased the stakes as they prepare for the tournament’s final rounds. With at least three other prospective players remaining in the mix, the race is sure to heat up in the coming days.
