Ross Taylor Makes Historic Comeback with Samoa at 41

Ross Taylor, one of Kiwi cricket’s greats, is back in the news again. He’s coming out of retirement to sport the Samoan colors at an upcoming qualifying tournament for the T20 World Cup. At 41 years old, Taylor is more than ready to bring his skills to the international stage. He finished his incredible 16-year career with the Black Caps in 2022. Just under two years ago, he last represented New Zealand. In his illustrious career, he played 450 matches in all formats and scored more runs than anyone except for one player in the country’s cricketing history—Kane Williamson.

For Taylor, choosing to play for Samoa was an obvious choice based on his long-standing ties to the island nation. With his mother born in Samoa, that made his return to the sport even more personal. He is now set to race in the Asia–East Asia-Pacific final regional qualifying event in Oman from October 8th to 17. But after months away from the game, this tournament will be his triumphant return. More importantly, it is a vital gateway, providing three qualifying places for the T20 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka next February and March.

Reflecting on his historic comeback, Taylor said he’s thrilled to be fighting on behalf of his heritage.

“This is more than just a return to the game I love — it’s the huge honour to represent my heritage, culture, villages, and family.” – Ross Taylor

As a former captain of the Black Caps, Taylor’s experience will prove invaluable to the Samoan outfit. He aims not only to contribute on the field but to mentor younger players as they navigate this crucial tournament. He stated,

“I’m excited for the opportunity to give back to the game, join the squad, and share my experience on and off the field.” – Ross Taylor

Throughout his illustrious career, Taylor played 112 Test matches and was known for his exceptional batting skills and leadership qualities. It’s clear that both fans and players are excited about his return. Cricket enthusiasts across the world are excited to see how he will influence this latest chapter of his cricket odyssey.

The tournament in Oman will provide a rare opportunity for Samoa to qualify for the T20 World Cup. With Taylor at the wheel, it looks like their odds of success could be promising. His leadership and experience would be crucial as they look to position themselves for one of those three coveted spots.
