Rory McIlroy’s Surprising Decision to Skip the Memorial Stuns Jack Nicklaus

Rory McIlroy, arguably the biggest name in professional golf, has turned heads. For the first time since 2017, he’s chosen to miss the Memorial Tournament. Few were as shocked by this announcement as golf icon Jack Nicklaus. Smith told the Golf Channel that he was in disbelief over McIlroy’s decision. The Memorial, played every year in Dublin, Ohio, just outside of Columbus, has turned into a cornerstone of McIlroy’s schedule. Since 2021, he has doubled up the Memorial with the Canadian Open on consecutive weeks each year.

McIlroy’s absence is especially glaring considering his robust record with the Canadian Open. He won the tournament outright in 2019. After clinching first place in 2020—only to have the event canceled because of the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic—he won first place again in 2022. He was preparing to play in the RBC Canadian Open next week, just prior to the U.S National Open. His decision to avoid the Memorial also points to concerns about his priorities and strategy now.

Even Jack Nicklaus, a member of golf’s elite, was caught off guard by the news. As a mentor to McIlroy as well, he never thought he’d be here. “I really don’t know why Rory didn’t talk to me,” Nicklaus said. The two haven’t spoken since McIlroy earned his career Grand Slam by winning the Masters earlier this year. In the wake of that triumph, Nicklaus had contacted to congratulate McIlroy with a personal letter — something that further displays their mutual respect and kinship.

Nicklaus had mentioned that McIlroy had come to him for advice prior to the Masters, asking about how to play his way around Augusta National. This bond has sent campaigners diving down the speculative rabbit hole of what may have changed McIlroy’s mind to skip the Memorial. As much as he hinted at disbelief — even disappointment — with McIlroy, Nicklaus made it clear that he has no grudges against his fellow golfer. “I’m a big Rory fan. I always have been. I’m sure that I will remain that way,” he stated.

In response to McIlroy’s withdrawal from this year’s Memorial, Jack Nicklaus said, “It’s just Rory’s call. He acknowledged that it is ultimately up to McIlroy to determine his schedule and priorities as he navigates his professional career.
