Rory McIlroy, the world’s No. 2 golfer, went all in and dropped a large gamble. He won’t be playing in next week’s Memorial Tournament. This decision understandably comes as a disappointment, as it would be the first time since 2017 that McIlroy has defaulted on this prestigious event. It was a lot more than the 36-year-old golfer’s struggles at last weekend’s PGA Championship. He ultimately finished three over par, good enough for a T-47 finish.
Given how well McIlroy played during the PGA Championship, that success shocked plenty. It was a far cry from how he had played this season to that point. Not since accomplishing the sport’s rarest feat — a career Grand Slam — at Augusta National on April 13 has he mustered more than a pair of top-12 finishes. As McIlroy looks back on his past performances, he hopes to get back to playing his best before bigger tournaments in the future. Nature in the golf community is eager for TPC’s outcome.
