Rory McIlroy, the celebrated Northern Irish golfer, has achieved significant milestones in the sport, including becoming the sixth player in history to complete a career Grand Slam. Earlier this year, he achieved this remarkable turn of form at the Masters, making him the first European to win there. As a further tribute, the DP World Tour has created the Rory McIlroy Award for top European golfer. Named to honor those laurels, this award celebrates players for their performances in the year’s four major championships, capturing McIlroy’s imprint on the sport.
The award announcement is another example of McIlroy’s lasting impact and legacy on the golf community. He is now the fifth player, living or dead, to have an award named in his honor by the European Tour. In 2026, when the Open Championship returns to Royal Liverpool, the first Rory McIlroy Award recipient will be decided. This well-deserved recognition will lift up decades of future golfers making their mark on the sport.
Rory McIlroy’s ties to the DP World Tour still run deep, even with his main residence located stateside. He has always regarded it as his real ‘home’, and he has kept strong connections with the tour during his long career. Since retiring from the golf political scene last November, he’s channeled that energy back into his game. In response, he went on to win seven titles, including a Grand Slam tournament at the Masters.

McIlroy’s choice to remove himself from the political maelstrom that is golf’s political landscape has given him the freedom to focus on his game. He noted that managing multiple responsibilities was challenging, stating, “You can’t keep all the plates spinning at the same time and something had to give.” His success on the course since this shift of focus has proved that he’s back to focusing on competitive play.
McIlroy is hunting his fourth straight Race to Dubai title and his seventh Order of Merit title. He is looking to pass the late, great Seve Ballesteros and get closer to Colin Montgomerie’s all time record. He is up against disciplined competition. Marco Penge and Tyrrell Hatton are the only men who can deny McIlroy of much of what he still desires at November’s DP World Tour Championship.
McIlroy responded to claims he was engaging in gamesmanship in golf. In terms of Aaron Rai, I’m not going to pretend that I’m the most PGA Tour educated person out there. He expressed disappointment over the situation, stating, “I feel like it’s disappointing. I would hope everybody knows that I wouldn’t do anything like that.”
McIlroy’s discipline in keeping life simple to better pursue his golf career is obvious. When asked how he makes time for passion projects, he observed that moving past the political circus puts a premium on artistic and personal satisfaction.
“I have a clear head and I’m out of all the political stuff in golf, basically, and I can just focus on playing and making myself competitively happy by playing in the tournaments that I want to play,” – Rory McIlroy
McIlroy values extra time he now has for personal happiness and his family.
“And having more time to make myself personally happy doing things I want to do away from golf, travelling with my family and showing my daughter different parts of the world, is a very nice place to be in life,” – Rory McIlroy
That’s why McIlroy insists it’s important for top players to show up for the biggest events. He believes this is especially important in light of the splintered state of men’s professional golf.
“With the fractured nature of the men’s professional game at the minute, this tour needs all of its stars to step up and play in the big events,” – Rory McIlroy
