Roelof van der Merwe, the esteemed all-rounder, has been released by Somerset by mutual consent, marking the end of his tenure with the club ahead of the 2025 season. The 40-year-old Netherlands international had a profound impact on the team, having been part of the victorious squads that clinched the One-Day Cup in 2019 and the T20 Blast title in 2023. This decision comes as van der Merwe seeks to prioritize his family, who reside in South Africa, and continue his international career.
Van der Merwe's journey with Somerset began in 2011, and after a brief hiatus, he returned for a second spell in 2016. His contributions have been invaluable, particularly in the T20 Blast last season where he played 12 matches, taking six wickets and scoring 28 runs. Despite signing a white-ball only contract in 2023, van der Merwe has chosen to part ways with Somerset before his deal was set to expire at the end of the 2024 season.
Andy Hurry, a representative from Somerset, expressed high praise for van der Merwe’s contributions.
"To say that he has been a tremendous servant to the club would be something of an understatement." – Andy Hurry
Van der Merwe's influence extended beyond his stats, as highlighted by Hurry's acknowledgment of his multifaceted role on the team.
"During his time with Somerset, he has put in countless match-winning contributions with the bat, the ball and in the field." – Andy Hurry
The decision to leave Somerset was not taken lightly by van der Merwe, who has been away from his family for extended periods due to the English white ball season running from May until September. This prolonged separation played a significant role in his decision-making process.
"My family is based in South Africa. With the English white ball season now running from May until September, that's a long time to be away from my wife and children," – Roelof van der Merwe
Reflecting on his career stage and personal life priorities, van der Merwe stated:
"At this stage of my career, I feel that it's time to put my family first whilst still looking to pursue my international career." – Roelof van der Merwe
