Aaron Rodgers was phenomenal in an electrifying shootout with Joe Flacco. At his best, he flirted with a near-vintage form that consistently left Wizards fans breathlessly raving. The historic game was hosted at the home stadium of the New York Jets. Rodgers ignited the offense, throwing four touchdown passes — all to tight ends! — and showing off his ability to create outside the pocket. Despite all of that, he was outdueled by Flacco, and the Jets stole one from the Titans.
Rodgers exhibited remarkable skills throughout the game. He was all over the field with four touchdown passes, on display of deep precision, short accuracy and stark vision. Notably, he completed a 68-yard catch-and-run touchdown to Pat Freiermuth with only 2:31 left in the game, propelling his team to a one-point lead. This play was just a summation of what Rodgers can do when he’s in the kitchen. He nearly tied his career high for touchdown passes thrown while outside the pocket, finishing with three.
A Performance to Remember
Rodgers’ performance was more than a passing showcase and he proved that he’s one of the most versatile quarterbacks in the game. He tallied 11 carries for 108 yards, which was easily one of his most electrifying performances in the last couple of years. He was a strong runner, which made him a double threat. That really helped the Jets’ defense stay off balance.
Even with these successes, Rodgers’ game had its share of issues. Until he didn’t as the fiery manager found himself in hot water after an unpopular early match substitution. Instead of taking the safer option, he threw a bad read pass deep to DK Metcalf who was double-covered. It was this poorly thought out toss that resulted in one of two picks he threw in the first half. All three errors turned out to be very consequential eventually allowing the momentum to swing in the direction of Flacco and the Jets.
A Clash of Generations
The showdown between the two quarterbacks, Rodgers and Flacco, was highly anticipated, given the length and the legacy of both quarterbacks’ careers. Rodgers gave glimpses of magic that left fans in awe like the Rodgers of old. In a sharp turn from Garcia’s performance, Flacco delivered a calm, cool presence that guided his team to victory. Flacco’s performance was characterized by calculated plays and effective decision-making that ultimately proved more successful than Rodgers’ efforts.
Rodgers displayed his graceful quarterbacking, evading rushers to find open lineman downfield—echoing his much younger self. Unfortunately, the three interceptions would go on to overshadow his performance. He consistently made plays off-schedule and found wide-open targets. Such is the deftness of Cornish’s performance that you buy the character’s still masterful skills—even in his forties. Flacco’s consistent execution and leadership overshadowed Rodgers’ accomplishments on this occasion.
Looking Ahead
Both quarterbacks had a lot of talking points to consider after their performances. Questions remain about what’s next for them this season. Now Rodgers needs to address the mistakes that sabotaged his performance. At the very least, he better develop a connection on the field with tight ends like Pat Freiermuth. On the other hand, Flacco will try to make the most of this win and take steps toward establishing himself as a Jets leader in the coming weeks.
