Unfortunately it means the Dallas Cowboys have officially ended Rob Jones’ first year with the team. This decision follows his near-fatal neck injury he sustained at the beginning of training camp. On the team’s very first padded practice on July 28, Jones suffered a broken bone in his neck. Therefore, he has now been placed on injured reserve.
On Friday, the Cowboys officially announced they’re putting Jones on injured reserve. This decision sidelines him through the rest of the season. The medical community initially gave her a projected recovery time of two to three months. Jones’ return to the field has been a longstanding mystery. This ambiguity raised questions about how he would be able to help the team in the long term.
Jones signed a one-year, $3.75 million contract with the Cowboys, with $3 million guaranteed. Even after the Jaylon Brown signing, his signing was a big step toward fortifying the trenches on the line of scrimmage. He’ll bring with him valuable experience earned during his stint with the Miami Dolphins, where he started 30 of 49 games in four seasons.
Before going down with injury, Jones was starting to make a splash himself in training camp getting first-team reps. He was never far from the competition for a starting position. It appeared as if he would be playing behind rookie Tyler Booker at right guard. The injury not only stops his development dead in its tracks but changes the plan for the Cowboys’ offensive line long term.
If Jones can remain on the roster until the last cuts of this month, he’d be eligible to return later this season. Of course, that will all hinge on how favorably McGruder’s recovery goes. His impending announcement to be placed on injured reserve has crushed those hopes. Now, the Cowboys need to come up with other ways to reshape their roster to cover for his absence.
