Week 2 of 2023 NFL preseason is in the books and some players really stood out, leaving their mark and creating excitement for the regular season.
Highlighted performers
Among the most exciting performances were Seattle Seahawks rookie running back Zach Charbonnet and Tennessee Titans rookie wide receiver Elic Ayomanor. As teams get closer to finalizing their rosters, these players have drawn attention for their on-field performances, despite some challenges faced by their teammates.
Zach Charbonnet proved he was ready in the spring and summer, staking his claim on a spot on the Seahawks’ 53-man roster. At the same time, Kenneth Walker III’s recurring availability issues made for a scary running back group in Seattle. In contrast, wide receiver David Sills V showed his potential as a reliable target, making two catches on Seattle’s opening series against the Titans.
Charbonnet’s Impressive Performance
Among the Seahawks was Zach Charbonnet, whose strong debut this preseason was the most encouraging aspect to Seattle’s summer. He had five carries on the very first drive vs. the Titans. He added an electrifying 45 yards rushing, displaying his penchant for impactful plays. His vision and burst were particularly evident when he scored a 15-yard touchdown run, demonstrating his readiness for the regular season.
While Charbonnet shines, Walker III’s struggles with injuries have left a gap in Seattle’s running game. He missed considerable time during the spring and summer, leading to concerns about his availability going forward. If Charbonnet keeps rolling, the Seahawks will even remove some of Walker’s load from his shoulders as Seahawks show him more confidence to do it himself in Walker’s absence.
Wide receiver David Sills V made big plays for the Seahawks’ offense. He had two receptions on the very first drive vs Tennessee. This performance has turned him into the Chiefs’ most frequently targeted wide receiver by Vikings QB Kirk Cousins in practice. Sills needs to find separation and catch the football. How well he does will be a big test as the Seahawks prepare to meet the Dallas Cowboys this Friday at 8 p.m. ET.
Ayomanor’s Bouncing Back
Tennessee Titans’ Elic Ayomanor was busy overcoming his own obstacles this past training camp. He stood resolutely on the opposite side. After an up and down week in practice where he was frustrated with competing against the Falcons’ defensive backs, Ayomanor reemerged. He turned in an impressive showing in the first preseason game. He did that along with catching two passes for 47 yards, showing on that 47 yarder that he can break games open with his receiving ability.
Ayomanor’s ability to do his best work in the middle of the field has been something that’s been a rising fear with opposing defenses. His heady, dynamic playstyle elevates the Titans’ offensive strategy to new heights. Their plan is to develop immediate chemistry between their rookie quarterback and wide receiver room.
While Ayomanor stumbled out of the gate last season, his recent success bodes well for him having a breakout campaign this year. His ability to rebound from a disappointing practice speaks highly of his resolve, and his rookie receiver’s unpredictability continues to excite.
Team Dynamics and Player Development
The evolution of players such as Zach Charbonnet and Elic Ayomanor exemplifies modern development, as well as the shifting culture and expectations on their respective teams. For Seattle, Charbonnet’s emergence could help mitigate concerns surrounding Walker III’s injuries. The coaching staff has to be optimistic about Charbonnet’s offseason development and his preseason playmaking ability.
Ayomanor’s development as a pass catcher will be important for a Titans squad that needs to become more dynamic through the air. His ability to exploit defenses could create more opportunities for other receivers and alleviate pressure on the team’s running game.
Players like Dylan Drummond, who recorded 12 catches in two preseason games, and Chris Blair, who caught a 52-yard touchdown pass from Easton Stick, show that both teams have depth and emerging talent that can contribute significantly in the regular season.
